About AVAKONOHIKI

Welcome to our Ancestral Visions of Aina website on ContentDM.  Our project is funded by an Administration for Native Americans (ANA) grant and is a working collaboration between the Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation (EKF) and Hawaiʻinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge.

Our Vision:
For generations, our ancestors understood how to make the land productive, but we are losing that knowledge.  We have to undertake efforts to preserve and reconnect ourselves to the ancestral knowledge of land and resource practices to improve our understanding and ability to take better care of ourselves.

Project Goal:
To improve the capacity of Hawaiians in the decision-making and oversight of lands and resources by sharing ancestral knowledge with the living descendants by strengthening the collective Hawaiian understanding of land and resource practices possessed by our ancestors so that we will be able to effectively manage our lands and resources and return to a level of food production and resource conservation that improves the overall wellbeing of our people.

Expected Outcomes of this Database:

The main results and benefits of the creation of this DB are: 1) Jobs created for Hawaiians 2) 12,400 archival land and resource records including 150 maps are made available to Hawaiians through an on-line database and used for research purposes to learn about ancestral lands and practices on the island of Oʻahu 3) 182,000 Hawaiians living in the islands or abroad will benefit from the ease of access and the scope and depth of the information contained in the on-line database and used it to improve their understanding of ancestral lands and genealogies, of malama ʻaina (caring for the land; conservation practices) and food production practices.

This website is created to deliver our Digital Library of Land Commission records.  For further information about our project please visit our webpage at www.AVAKONOHIKI.org
